Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the pathology, physiology and morphology of the dental pulp. Endodontists treat and diagnose pulp diseases.

Why is root canal treatment necessary?

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp of the tooth is inflamed for various reasons, such as deep caries or trauma to the tooth, which also cause necrosis (death) of the pulp.
Necrosis often leads to the formation of infections that reach the bony part, forming what is called a chronic or acute dental abscess. All these situations are solved with the endodontic therapy of the tooth, which consists in cleaning the tooth from the inflamed or necrotic pulp, processing the canal system with the relevant instruments and filling this system with biocompatible materials.
